CARTHAGE The academic leaders for the class of 2013 at Carthage Central School are Sarah Elizabeth Allison, valedictorian, and Benjamin Alexander Reynolds, salutatorian.
Miss Allison, daughter of David and Sandra Allison, Carthage, has an academic average of 97.65. She is a member of National Honor Society and Art Club and a vocalist at her church and has taken dance lessons for two years. She has volunteered at Country Manor Nursing Home, helped to organize Salvation Army bell ringing during the winter of 2012 and the 2013 High School Talent Show.
She is involved with her church Youth Council, serving as youth president for two years and youth representative on the District Nazarene Youth Council. She also has taken drawing and painting classes for four years and received several awards for her work, including two Scholastic Silver Keys, one honorable mention for Scholastics, two first-place awards for the Tri-County Art Show and one second-place award for the Carthage Savings and Loan Bank Show. She was featured as WWNY Channel 7-News Fine Arts All-Star for April, the Elks Youth of the Month for September and has received the 2013 Bennie VanBrocklin Memorial Award and a state Board of Regents Academic Excellence Award.
Miss Allison will major in psychology at Olivet Nazarene University, Bourbonnais, Ill.
Mr. Reynolds, son of John and Caron Reynolds, Carthage, has an academic average of 97.39. He is class vice president and captain of the varsity soccer team and jazz band. He is a self-taught drum and guitar player and a member of National Honor Society, Science Olympiad and varsity track and field team.
Mr. Reynolds has been involved with his church youth group for four years, played drums on the worship team, helped with ministry events and went on a mission trip to Bolivia during spring break. Over the past two summers, he was a teen leadership trainee and day camp counselor at Beaver Camp, Lowville.
He has umpired Little League for three years and worked part-time at V.S. Virkler and Sons Inc., Lowville. Mr. Reynolds was a WWNY Channel 7-News Academic All-Star, an Elks and Carthage High School Student of the Month, took third place in the Math League Competition and received a state Board of Regents Academic Excellence Award. During his junior year, he was named to the presidents list at Jefferson Community College, Watertown, and received the AP Scholar Award.
Mr. Reynolds will major in computer engineering at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Troy.
