U.S. Rep. William L. Owens, D-Plattsburgh, in a statement released Tuesday, said the reported Internal Revenue Service investigations of conservative political groups related to their tax-exempt status was “completely unacceptable.”

“I support the call for an investigation into what happened, and if it is found that individuals within the IRS intentionally committed this targeted activity, they should be swiftly removed from their position,” Mr. Owens said in the news release.

He noted in the release that bipartisan support for an investigation is growing, with President Barack Obama saying earlier that he has “no patience” for such activity and Republican leadership requesting additional information on the reports.

“This is an issue of fairness, and I am pleased to join voices from both sides calling for full accountability from those involved,” Mr. Owens said.
