Police will get two patrol bikes

The Ogdensburg Police Department will ramp up its patrol bike fleet, doubling its number to four with $3,000 from its forfeiture of criminal proceeds account.

The city council on Monday voted 7-0 of spending the funds to pay for two $1,100 heavy duty bicycles with custom brakes, gears and other equipment.

Chief Richard J. Polniak Jr. has three officers trained and certified for bike patrol duty and plans to have three more on board soon.

“I anticipate getting back to full strength,” he said.

The bike patrol, Mr. Polniak said, is good at catching of offenders in street crimes such as disorderly conduct, criminal mischief and unlawful possession of marijuana.

“They never see them coming,” the chief said. “It’s pretty impressive.”

Voting to spend the funds were Mayor William D. Nelson, Deputy Michael D. Morley and Daniel E. Skamperle, . Jennifer Stevenson, R. Storm Cilley, William D. Hosmer and Wayne L. Ashley. The forfeiture of criminal proceeds account has $10,000 remaining in it.

In other business, the lawmakers also voted 7-0 in favor of paying $32,400 to Op-Tech Environmental Services Inc., Massena, to remove an above-ground fuel tank from the grounds of the defunct former kosher cheese plant at 30 Main St., which the city owns.

The tank must be gone by next month, said City Manager John M. Pinkerton.

“DEC (state Department of Environmental Conservation) has determined that it has to come out,” he said.
