DPW wants drying bed for solid waste

OGDENSBURG — The city Department of Public Works wants to install an outdoor drying bed for solid waste collected by its vacuum truck.

The City Council earlier this week tabled a resolution to hire Bishop General Construction to build an open, low-walled concrete enclosure on the grounds of the waste treatment plant on Railroad Street. The lawmakers agreed with Deputy Mayor Michael D. Morley’s suggestion to see whether the DPW could do the job for less than the contractor’s $46,200 low bid.

Timothy P. Adams, the plant’s chief operator, said the drying bed would be convenient because it would provide more space for the solids to separate from liquid wastes and time to dry before being removed to an underground sanitary sewer line that runs into the plant where they are treated.

Drying time, according to Mr. Adams, isn’t necessarily a long one.

“It depends on the weather,” he said. “It shouldn’t take more than a few days.”

The other contractors and their bids were T.J. Fiacco Construction, Norwood, $47,770; E.J. Construction Group, Liverpool, $49,900; Murnane Building Construction, Plattsburgh, $59,800; Harvey Excavation, Chase Mills, $68,990; B-S Industrial Construction, Gouverneur, $72,500; Con-Tech Building Systems, Gouverneur, $74,329; Tuscarora Construction, Pulaski, $94,958; and Bette & Cring, Watertown, $99,200.
