‘Mother’s Day’

EDITOR’S NOTE:The following Ogdensburg Ministerial Association article was submitted last week by the Rev. F. James Shurtleff, pastor of Notre Dame Church, in honor of Mother’s Day, but was not published due to an oversight. We apologize, Father Jim.

Pator, Notre Dame Church

This coming Sunday, as we observe Mother’s Day, we will give special honor to all our mothers and grandmothers. I suggest the following prayer as we thank God for them and for all that they have done for us:

Almighty God, You have been pleased to give all human beings the joy of having a mother, one who works with You to give them life and bring them to human adulthood.

You have given the followers of your Son, Jesus, the added joy of a Christian mother, who works with You to give supernatural life to a child and bring that child to Christian adulthood.

Over the centuries, there have been countless mothers and grandmothers — heroic, courageous, loving, dedicated and unconquerable, who in the final analysis have given us our Christian faith.

Without them, there would be no Church, no religious vocation and no Christian influence in the world. Most of these mothers and grandmothers are unsung heroes in the eyes of the world; they must be content with little things: a smile, a thank-you, and a token of remembrance. In your eyes, however, O God, they are of inestimable worth.

Your Word in the Bible uses a mother’s love to describe Your overwhelming love for Your people (Isaiah 49:15), and Jesus uses the image of a mother bird to indicate His love for His people (Matthew 23:37).

Most of all, when Jesus wants to convey an idea of joy of those in heaven, He does so by using the image of a mother’s pure joy in bringing a child into the world (John 16:21).

Dear Lord, let us honor our mothers and grandmothers if they are living and remember them in prayer if they have died. Pour Your grace on them and on all mothers and grandmothers on this day dedicated to them. Amen!
