MADRID The academic leaders for the class of 2013 at Madrid-Waddington Central School are Kathleen Elizabeth Tiernan and Austin David Scott, co-valedictorians, and Jennifer Elaine Ryan, salutatorian.
Miss Tiernan is the daughter of Terry and Vivian Tiernan, Madrid. She will graduate with an advanced Regents diploma with honors. She has played soccer, basketball and softball and is a member of the Varsity Club. She was co-captain of the girls varsity soccer team and received a Captains award her senior year. Miss Tiernan also received two Academic All-Northern awards, two Section X Outstanding Sportsmanship awards and the Physical Education Student Leadership award her senior year.
She is editor of the 2013 yearbook, president of the Whiz Quiz team, member of high school chorus, Stardust and select choir, and president of the Kathryn E. Fay Chapter of the National Honor Society. Miss Tiernan is member and past secretary of Key Club, has been a member of Mock Trial team for three years, participating as a lawyer and witness and helping the team achieve the county championship in 2012.
She served as class president her junior year and performed in four school drama club productions. She tutors first-grade students and seventh-grade French and Spanish students and worked summers at SUNY Potsdams North Country Migrant Education Program and during the year as a student aide. Miss Tiernan will attend Carleton University, Ottawa, to major in international affairs and minor in French.
Mr. Scott is the son of Mark and Kelly Scott, Waddington. He has played soccer, basketball, baseball and winter and spring track, breaking two school records for spring track. He is a member of Speech and Debate Club, Robotics, Lab Rats, History Club, Drama Club and the National Honor Society. Mr. Scott is a graduate of American Legion Boys State. He will attend Worcester (Mass.) Polytechnic Institute to major in mechanical engineering. He plans to pursue a career in a math- and science-related field.
Miss Ryan is the daughter of Robert and Trudy Ryan, Waddington. She has participated in Speech and Debate Club, Drama Club, playing various leading roles in plays and musicals, and Mock Trial team as both an attorney and witness and assisted the team in becoming county champions in 2010 and 2012.
As part of the schools merger program, she was on the swim team for Canton Central School since seventh grade, and is its co-captain. Miss Ryan is a member of Stardust and band, vice president of the National Honor Society, president of Speech and Debate and president of Key Club. She took first place in oral interpretation at the Speech and Debate Upstate Tournament, held in Rochester. She will attend Binghamton University to major in human development.
