Watertown- Joan M. Genter, 79, Samaritan Summit Village, and widow of Charles R. Genter, passed away Thursday, May 16th at the Hospice Residence at the Ellis Farm, Gotham St., Watertown.

Graveside services will be 11 am Monday, May 20th at the Glenwood Cemetery with Rev. Steven Murray officiating. There are no calling hours. Arrangements are with the Reed & Benoit Funeral Home. Contributions may be made to Hospice of Jefferson County, 1398 Gotham St., Watertown, NY 13601.

She was born in Adams, January 9, 1934, a daughter to Earl P. and Carrie Smith Hayes. She was educated at Holy Family School and was a 1952 graduate of Watertown High School. Joan furthered her education at Potsdam College. Joan was a customer service representative with the New York Telephone Co. for 25 years until her retirement.

Joan was a member of the Watertown Lioness and Lions Club, the American Legion Post 61. She was a communicant of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Church and a member of the Cosmopolitan Dance Club.

Her first marriage to John B. Lamon ended in divorce. She married Charles R. Genter April 29th, 1980. Mr. Genter, retired President of Genter Bros. Music and Vending, died December 9, 1996.

Joan is survived by a daughter, Daphne (Stanley) Swinford, Augusta, GA. Two sons and their wives, Martin P. and Marta Lamon, Watertown; John P. and Laura Lamon, Alex Bay. 12 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren. A step-son, Gregory Genter, Michigan; a step daughter Kristen Khalifi, Georgia. Nieces and nephews. A step-son, Charles Roy Genter and three brothers Richard, Larry and Thomas Hayes predeceased her.
