MADRID - Madrid-Waddington Baseball team handed Norwood-Norfolk its first NAC East Division loss of the season on Thursday winning a 2-1 pitchers duel at Jim Rishe Field.
This was a very well pitched game by both teams. Greg Thompson threw strikes and Harrison VanBuren come through at 0-2 in the sixth inning and provided a clutch hit to score the game-winning run. Defensively, we made a couple of mistakes in the first inning and Norwood-Norfolk capitalized but we came through with a big defensive plays in the third to get a popup to Jacob Barney and Harrison VanBuren ran down a flyball, said M-W coach Justin Richards after his team improved to 6-4 in the East and dropped the Flyers to 10-1 (12-2 overall).
Cody Smith reached on an infield error in the first, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Zeb Brown and later scored on a error off the bat of Cody Rust.
Greg Thompson pitched six scoreless innings from there for the Jackets striking out seven and allowing four hits. Chris Prashaw singled in the second and fourth and Cody Smith doubled and Brandon Short singled in the third where the Flyers left the bases loaded.
Michael Thew recorded M-Ws first hit in the game in the third inning off Brandon Short. Short pitched five and two-thirds allowing three hits, two runs, one walk and struck out six batters. Cody Smith fanned one batter in relief.
In the sixth inning, Tanner Uppstrom lined a single and Mike Thew sacrificed him to secondbase and Thompson lined a single to make it first and third.
A pick off attempt by Short to first allowed pinch runner James Hunt to score from thirdbase and Thompson moved to third. VanBuren then singled for the game-winning run with two outs.
Tupper Lake 10, B-M 9: Ryan Delair scored Kris Crouse from thirdbase in the sixth inning for the Lumberjacks (4-8) over the Panthers (8-4). Mitch Keniston fanned eight batters in the win and Keniston went 2-3 with a double and two RBIs while Devin Larson finished 3-4 with a triple and three RBI.
Alex Burnett went 2-4 with three RBI for Brushton-Moira.
