Seniors club needs a meeting place

We are theNew Watertown Senior Citizens Club of Jefferson County formed in 1979. We meet Friday nights at the Dulles State Office Building on Washington Street in Watertown. This group of seniors comes from Oswego, Jefferson, Lewis and St. Lawrence counties. Watertown is our central location, and the meeting is the only exercise that some of these seniors get, which is 2.5 hours of dancing, socializing and snacks one night a week.

On March 8, 2013, the annual contract for use of the building was filled out and signed as a “repeat client.” Now after 34 years, the state demanded liability insurance. The state waived the insurance for over 10 years, and we never had a claim to my knowledge. This club is self-supporting, with no help from anyone. The only way we survive is with two benefits in the summer by our bands, County Stompers and the Black River Fiddlers, to get us through the winter when our attendance is down.

We did get insurance. I have talked with Sen. Patty Ritchie’s office about a waiver, but nothing as of this writing. This is such a small issue and no big expense for the state, but a bigger issue for us seniors.

I have always wondered why a city as big as Watertown doesn’t have a place where seniors can go to socialize, play cards and have a pot luck dinner.
