Canadian quake jolts St. Lawrence County

POTSDAM — An earthquake that started in Canada was felt across parts of Northern New York Friday morning.

SUNY Potsdam geology professor Frank A. Revetta said his equipment detected a magnitude 5.0 quake at 9:43 a.m., originating in what is known as the Western Quebec Seismic Zone northwest of Ottawa, Ont.

There were no immediate reports of damage in Northern New York, but Mr. Revetta said he received several calls from people around St. Lawrence County who reported feeling the vibration.

“I didn’t feel it at all,” said Mr. Revetta, who was in an office on campus at the time.

According to the U.S. Geological Survey, Friday’s earthquake was centered in Quebec about 37 miles northwest of Ottawa, at a depth of 6.4 miles beneath the surface.

Canadian media outlets reported that the quake could be felt throughout wide areas of Ontario and Quebec, at least as far away as Toronto.

Accounts of the quake’s intensity varied. USGS reported its magnitude as 4.4, while Earthquakes Canada described it as being at 5.0.

“It’s a common phenomenon,” Mr. Revetta said of quakes in the area, although the size of Friday morning’s seismic incident was somewhat larger than usual.

Earthquakes Canada reported a 4.1 magnitude aftershock followed the initial quake about 10 minutes later.

Mr. Revetta did not expect Friday’s activity was a prelude to larger quakes.

“I don’t believe people have to be concerned about another one occurring,” he said.
