I graduated from Clarkson University a bachelor of science in mechanical engineering in May 2011. I attended the graduation ceremony on May11 for the class of 2013 as a guest of some friends. At both the ceremonies, the one I was part of and the one May 11, Sen. Chuck Schumer gave a speech. Now let me preface this by saying he and I couldnt have more polarized political views, but this has nothing to do with that.
At the ceremony in 2011 he showed up late, gave a speech and then left. This year he showed up much later than he did in 2011. I find it very disrespectful to the graduates and their families that he cant stay for the whole ceremony. I also find it disrespectful that his speech is always campaigning.
I wrote the senator after my graduation and never heard back. I mean Clarkson graduates are a big part of the future of New York, and I think he should show them the respect they deserve. I think that if he is going to be invited to attend it should be made clear that he needs to sit through the entire graduation like everyone else. I think he should also be given some guidelines on what his speech shouldnt be able to include.
I hope to see these changes implemented for my brothers graduation from Clarkson next year.
