Defending Section 3 Class C champion South Lewis and Frontier League “A’’ Division regular-season and championship winner Watertown High School both received No. 2 seeds for the 2013 Section 3 baseball playoffs on Sunday.

South Lewis (17-2), which captured the Frontier League “C’’ Division crown again this season, drew a first-round bye in Class C-2 and will host the No. 10 Frankfort-Schuyler (12-7) at No. 7 Tully (8-7) winner at 4:30 p.m. Thursday in a quarterfinal game.

In Section 3 Class C-2 softball, defending champion Sandy Creek earned the top seed.

Watertown (15-4), which made it to the Class AA semifinals a year ago, awaits the winner Thursday of a Frontier League matchup sending No. 10 Indian River (6-7) to No. 7 Carthage (11-7) at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday.

Eleven other Frontier League teams qualified, either by winning 40 percent of their overall games, league games or games within their class.

In Class B, both local entrants have tough first-round games on Tuesday. South Jefferson (7-11), the No. 14 seed, plays at No. 3 Vernon-Verona-Sherrill (17-3), and No. 15 General Brown (4-14) is at No. 2 Westhill (15-4).

Third-seeded Lowville (13-4) will play host to No. 13 Thousand Islands (14-4) at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday in a Class C-1 quarterfinal matchup.

Immaculate Heart Central (11-6) earned the No. 6 seed in Class C-1 and plays a quarterfinal game at No. 3 Sauquoit Valley (11-7) on Thursday.

Beaver River (13-5) claimed the No. 3 seed in Class C-2 and hosts No. 6 Westmoreland (9-11) in a quarterfinal game on Thursday.

Sandy Creek (7-10) is No. 8 in Class C-2 and is home against No. 9 West Canada Valley (8-10) in a first-round game Tuesday.

A rematch of Saturday’s Copenhagen/LaFargeville Frontier League “D’’ Division championship game is on tap in the Class D first round. LaFargeville (9-8), seeded 11th, plays the No. 6 Golden Knights (11-6) at 4:30 p.m. in Copenhagen.

Also Tuesday in the first round, No. 13 Sackets Harbor (6-10) visits No. 4 Hamilton (13-4), and No. 14 Belleville Henderson (5-11) plays at No. 3 Oriskany (13-5).

Semifinals are scheduled for Saturday at higher seeds, with finals slated for Monday, May 27 at DeLutis Field in Rome.

SOFTBALL

COMETS NAB TOP SEED

The Sandy Creek Comets received the top seed in the Section 3 Class C-2 softball playoff bracket on Sunday and will begin their title defense in a quarterfinal game at 5 p.m. Thursday against the winner of No. 8 Port Byron and No. 9 Bishop Grimes.

The Comets finished the regular season 17-1 and won the Frontier League “C” Division title. Last season, they won the Class C-2 and overall Class C titles and advanced to the state quarterfinals.

In the Class C-1 bracket, South Lewis (13-5) received the fifth seed and will play at No. 4 Pulaski in the quarterfinals at 5 p.m. Thursday. Thousand Islands (7-9) claimed the No. 8 seed and will host No. 9 Mount Markham at 5 p.m. Tuesday in the first round.

In Class B, South Jefferson (15-3) claimed the third seed and will host No. 14 Bishop Ludden at 5 p.m. Thursday. General Brown (16-4) is the fourth seed and will host No. 13 Vernon-Verona-Sherrill at the same time and day, and fifth-seeded Altmar-Parish-Williamstown (14-4) will host No. 12 Sherburne-Earlville also at 5 p.m. Thursday.

Five Frontier League teams qualified in the Class D bracket. LaFargeville (15-5), which has yet to lose to a Class D team this season, received the fourth seed and will host No. 13 Remsen in a first-round game on Thursday.

Alexandria (8-8) is the No. 10 seed and will open play at No. 7 New York Mills, Lyme (7-9) captured the 12th seed and will play at No. 5 McGraw, Copenhagen (8-9) claimed the No. 14 seed and is slated to play at No. 3 Hamilton, and Immaculate Heart Central (4-10) is the No. 15 seed and will play at No. 2 Oriskany. All five of those first-round games are scheduled for 5 p.m. Thursday.

Indian River (11-7) received the No. 7 seed in Class A and will open with a quarterfinal game at No. 2 Jamesville-DeWitt at 5 p.m. Thursday.
