Jefferson County has spent more than $550,000 housing inmates from its overcrowded jail at other facilities in the state as of the end of April.
Thats more than twice what it spent at this point last year.
In its adopted budget, the county has set aside $900,000 for outboarding costs in 2013.
With more than seven months to go in 2013, Sheriff John P. Burns said the costs would be way over that budgeted figure by years end.
Mr. Burns has long advocated an expansion at the jail, though county legislators have resisted spending the estimated $12 million it would cost to build an addition.
County Legislator Philip N. Reed, R-Fishers Landing, chairman of the County Board of Legislators General Services Committee, which oversees the sheriffs budget, said that he is trying to arrange a meeting with the sheriff, undersheriff and board Chairwoman Carolyn D. Fitzpatrick, R-Watertown, to discuss the jail issue in the coming weeks.
