Woods to return to Verona for Begay Challenge


VERONA — The world’s top-ranked golfer is returning to Central New York this summer to again participate in the Notah Begay III (NB3) Foundation Challenge.

Oneida Nation Representative Ray Halbritter and four-time PGA Tour winner Notah Begay III announced Monday that Tiger Woods will again head the field for the sixth annual event on Aug. 28 at Turning Stone Resort’s Atunyote Golf Club.

Woods, a 14-time major champion and 78-time PGA Tour winner, will be joined by such PGA Tour stars such as Lee Westwood, Rickie Fowler, Charl Schwartzel, K.J. Choi and Henrik Stenson.

The 12-person field will represent three teams competing in a combined best-ball format.

Joining Begay and four-time participant Woods on Team USA are Fowler and Bo Van Pelt.

Team Asia features eight-time tour winner K.J. Choi, touring pro Charlie Wi, and a pair of up-and-coming stars, John Huh and James Hahn.

Team International is led by former world No. 1 and 40-time professional winner Westwood. Also, 2011 Masters Champion Schwartzel, 2009 Players champion Stenson and Nicolas Colsaerts, who helped Europe win the 2012 Ryder Cup.

The event has raised more than $4 million in the past five years for improved health and wellness of Native American youth nationwide.
