MASSENA - The St. Lawrence Seaway Development Corporation announced Thursday that the traditional Memorial Day weekend opening of the visitors center at the U.S. Eisenhower lock will not open this weekend.
According to a release from the SLSDC damage caused by the weather this past winter is the reason the centers opening is delayed this year.
The Dwight D. Eisenhower Visitors Center, located at the U.S. Eisenhower lock in Massena, N.Y., will not open to the public on Memorial Day weekend due to on-going facility maintenance to repair damages caused by this past winters weather, the release states. During the repair period, visitors should proceed to the Eisenhower Lock North Side Observation area, which is open to the public and will remain open throughout the year.
The SLSDC has been working on repairing the facility, which includes replacement of the main buildings roof and repairs to the ground floor of the Center that suffered water damage. The 50-year-old structure sustained the damage due to a failure of the roof that is also the main level of the observation deck.
While no timetable for when the visitorss center will open was announced, the release said the agency is expecting work on the building to take a few weeks.
We thank the public for their understanding and look forward to restoring the Visitors Center for the community and visitors to the North Country, said SLSDC Associate Administrator for Seaway Operations Sal Pisani. Once the repairs have been completed, the SLSDC will announce the reopening of the Visitors Center and provide visitors with the opportunity to enjoy viewing the ships that navigate the St. Lawrence Seaway.
