Local race tracks prepare Memorial Day events

North Country auto racing fans will be treated to some special Memorial Day Weekend shows this week as well as regular weekly programs.

Billy Dunn of Watertown will try to defend his 2012 Memorial Cup small-block modifieds win tonight at Mohawk International Raceway in Akwesasne.

Racing is also scheduled in the sportsman, pro stocks, mod lites and bandits divisions. Racing begins at 7:30 p.m.

Can-Am Motorsports Park in LaFargeville is back to racing at 7:30 tonight after a Wednesday night program. It will be a regular night of scheduled races.

Josh Van Brocklin won a thriller Wednesday in the 40-lap SUNY Canton Shootout in the sportsman feature. He completed his last lap pass on the final turn to edge Nick Guererri. David Rogers (pro street) and Bill Ridele (late models) also won features.

Evans Mills Speedway will have a full schedule of racing Saturday night beginning at 6. Justin Pope (thunder stocks), Homer Dobransky (sports compact), Al Doxtater (super stocks), Chris Zieren (legends), Jordan McCreadie (modifieds), Erica Gardner (juniors) and Randy Mooney (trucks) won races last weekend.

The Jim Shampine Memorial for supermodifieds and the Richie Evans Memorial for modifieds highlight the tripleheader Saturday at Oswego Speedway. Racing begins at 5 p.m.
