Potsdam vets groups to collaborate on Memorial Day

POTSDAM - Unlike past years when one veteran’s group had sponsored Memorial Day festivities in Potsdam, this year multiple organizations will work together in ceremonies to honor both our surviving and fallen servicemen and women.

Robert S. Crary, commander of Potsdam’s Veterans of Foreign Wars, said the American Legion, Disabled American Veterans and the VFW will all be involved with the ceremony this year.

“The old saying goes ‘more hands hands make light work,’” Mr. Crary said.

A VFW-sponsored parade will set off from Potsdam High School at 9 a.m. and head down Cottage and Main streets to Ives Park, where a ceremony will be held, with Rev. James Barnes, pastor of the United Methodist Church in Potsdam, and veterans Stanley Crump as speakesr. After the ceremony, veterans and residents can go to the American Legion at 128 state Route 345 for refreshments, including hamburgers and hot dogs.

Mr. Crary pointed out this year is a particularly significant Memorial Day, being it an anniversary of a number of major wars and armed conflicts throughout U.S. history. This marks the 200th anniversary of local battles during the War of 1812, the 100th anniversary of the Moro Campaign in the Philippines, the 70th anniversary of World War II, the 60th anniversary of the Korean War, the 50th anniversary of early involvement in Vietnam, the 30th anniversary of the Beruit barracks bombing in Lebanon, the 20th anniversary of the conflict in Somalia and the 10th anniversary of the invasion of Iraq.

Mr. Crary encourages everyone in the community to come out and honor area veterans. “I hope the weather’s good, and I hope everyone comes out to have a good time,” he said.
