Massena Rescue Squad holding open house, fundraisers on Monday

MASSENA - The Massena Rescue Squad will be opening its doors to the public during their 39th annual radiothon and open house from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday.

The event raises money for the rescue squad, with much of that funding going toward new equipment that keeps them technologically up to date.

“Every year when we have it, all funds go toward things not provided for in our annual budget. This year it’s basically personal protective equipment,” Norm Worden, chairman of the board and critical care technician with the squad said.

Equipment needs have changed over the years, he said.

“We’ve been buying bulletproof vests because of problems in the community, just in case,” Mr. Worden said.

They also want to buy special boots that can be worn while on call so rescue squad members don’t have to wear their personal shoes.

“We just bought some with an Alcoa ACTION (Alcoans Coming Together in Our Neighborhoods)grant. All the stuff we’re wearing when we respond to calls, there’s only a certain amount budgeted,” he said.

The open house will include a silent auction for items that have been donated to the Massena Rescue Squad. Mr. Worden said he “put out feelers for things” in January and the items have been coming in.

“We have a lot of big ticket items this year,” Mr. Worden said.

They include four tickets for a July NASCAR race in Loudon, New Hampshire; two season passes for Clarkson men’s hockey games; two day passes to Darien Lake in Western New York; two autographed pictures donated by the Buffalo Bills; an autographed Buffalo Sabres 2013 yearbook donated by the team; a fishing lure package from Let’s Go Fishing; and either wood pellets or cedar mulch donated by Curran Renewable Energy.

“There might be a couple of big surprises at the last minute. I’m still waiting (to hear),” he said.

Massena merchants have also donated items that are being put into packages for a Chinese auction. Walmart has donated a BMX bicycle and anyone who contributes $10 will receive a ticket for that raffle.

“It’s a $10 donation ticket for the bike or $100 for 10 tickets for the bike,” Mr. Worden said.

Anyone who contributes $100 or more will have their name put on a plaque that will be located at the rescue squad.

The Masons will be on hand again with the Child Identification program, there will be a blood pressure clinic and Mr. Worden said they’re tentatively scheduled to have someone doing face painting and possibly balloon animals for kids.

SeaComm Federal Credit Union has donated funds for a bounce house, and there will be games such as ring toss, ambulance bean bag toss and, for the adults, a toilet flush in which they sit on a toilet and, if they hit their target, a volunteer is flushed with water.

“That’s why they call it a toilet flush. Right now we’ve lined up the mayor of Massena, the chief of police and some are tentative. I thank the mayor and the chief of police because they’re coming down to volunteer time to do that for us,” Mr. Worden said.

They also plan to have a medevac helicopter on hand for tours, weather pending.

Volunteers will be serving us picnic fare like hamburgers, hot dogs, salad, chips and soda during the day.

“It’s basically free. We would like a donation, but it’s not necessary,” Mr. Worden said.

The day’s activities will be broadcast on 1340 WMSA radio, with Sanford T. Cook on site once again.

“We used it do it at the radio station,” Mr. Worden said.

The event was later moved to the squad’s old headquarters on Alcoa Bridge Road and now takes place at their East Orvis Street site.
