Ogdensburg’s cancer treatment Center plans $4.2 million expansion

The Richard E. Winter Cancer Treatment Center in Ogdensburg is planning a $4.2 million expansion to accommodate an enhanced tumor treatment program.

The Claxton-Hepburn Medical Center-affiliated facility at 5 Lyon Place wants to add a second Varian Trilogy Linear Accelerator inside a new, 3,400-square-foot addition on the 214 King St. hospital’s Mansion Avenue side.

“It’s going to allow us to treat even smaller tumors,” hospital spokeswoman Laura C. Shea said. “Our current linear accelerator treats small tumors precisely now.”

The ability to treat smaller tumors, Mrs. Shea said, will allow patients to stay close to home instead of having to travel to either Syracuse or Burlington, Vt., for treatment.

“For example, a patient with a three-millimeter brain lesion would have to travel to a larger treatment center,” Mrs. Shea said. “We will be able to treat that patient here with the new linear accelerator.”

The two new treatment types are stereotactic radiosurgery and stereotactic body radiation therapy. The size of the center’s construction project requires a variance from the city of Ogdensburg’s zoning board of appeals because of the required setback from the sidewalk on Mansion Avenue.

The building will come within one foot of the sidewalk. The city has a 15-foot setback requirement.

The zoning board of appeals will consider the matter when it meets Tuesday.

Construction is set to begin in early summer and take six months to complete.

The center hopes to minimize any loss of parking with its building expansion. The fašade of the building will include faux windows.

The center opened in 1994.
