QUEENSBURY Sandy Creek had its opponent right where it wanted them in the state Class C softball final Saturday. But it didnt get the result it wanted.
Sandy Creek (23-2) saw the game-tying run tagged out at the plate in the seventh inning and fell, 2-1, to Section 6s Frewsburg in the championship at the Adirondack Sports Complex.
The Comets, looking for their first state title since 2004, placed runners at the corners with two outs in the seventh when top hitter Chelsea Claflin came to the plate. The first pitch to Claflin was wild and the runner at third base broke for the plate, but was thrown out.
Sandy Creek advanced to the final by overwhelming Section 2s Greenwich earlier in the day, 11-1, in a semifinal in Glens Falls.
Claflin pitched a five-hitter in that game, striking out eight. She also contributed a double, single and three RBIs.
Jordan Miller supplied three hits and an RBI. Kendra Valley supplied a two-run single. The Comets scored six runs in the sixth inning.
