Canton’s Pierce wins state title in 3,000

MIDDLETOWN — Canton’s Laura Pierce took first place in the Division II 3,000 meters race to claim the state title Saturday at the NYSPHSAA track and field championships at Middletown high school.

Pierce, a junior, completed the race in 10 minutes, .21 seconds.

The Canton 3,200 relay, which included Pierce, finished second in Division II.

South Jefferson sophomore Skylar Pastor placed second in the 400 meters in Division II. Her time of 57.85 was also good for eighth place in the Federation meet.

Altmar-Parish-Williamstown’s Kylee Bartlett finished second in the Division II pentathlon.

Malone’s Harvey Smith finished fourth in the 400 meters state event in Division I.

The rain-delayed state championships began at 8:30 a.m. and all events were scheduled to be completed by the end of Saturday.
