Three Massena police officers injured in confrontation on Main Street

MASSENA — Three village police officers were injured Friday during a confrontation with a man with a knife who reportedly was struggling with mental health problems.

Police Chief Timmy J. Currier said officers responded at 11:24 a.m. to check on the welfare of a 46-year-old man on Main Street between Bridges Avenue and Harrowgate Commons who was reported to be distressed and delusional.

While talking to the police on a front porch, the man pulled a 5-inch buck knife from his pocket, prompting two officers to draw their handguns and one officer his taser, Mr. Currier said. After several warnings, the man raised the knife further and began to open it, he said.

The man then dropped the knife but punched an officer in the head and neck. Police responded with the taser gun and the suspect “went down” but resisted officers’ attempts to handcuff him, the police chief said.

“Eventually, officers were able to secure the suspect in handcuffs,” he said.

The man, whom Mr. Currier did not identify, was taken to Massena Memorial Hospital and transferred to Claxton-Hepburn Medical Center, Ogdensburg, for psychiatric evaluation.

Mr. Currier said the man will face criminal charges after he is released from the hospital.

He said the three police officers, whom he also declined to identify, were treated in the Massena hospital and released. One officer suffered an injury to his head and neck and two officers suffered injuries to their hands, he said.
