On May 21, a group from Northern New York attended a rally in Albany to demand a repeal of the SAFE ACT. We assisted in personally hand delivering approximately 400,000 hand signed postcards asking for immediate action on Assembly bill A5955 to repeal the SAFE ACT. A group of three of us working as a team met with Alec Brook-Kransy from Assembly District 46. We delivered our cards and had a conversation with him. He stated he did vote for the SAFE ACT. When asked why, he stated it was an emotional time. So he also agreed that he voted with his emotions and not common sense and logic. He also stated that several legislators are reconsidering.
When we were leaving his office, we ran into our assembly person, Addie Russell. We asked for a moment of her time. She blew us off, stating she needed to get to a press conference by the governor. She informed us if we want to meet with her we needed to make an appointment and she had already met with another person. We simply asked her to reconsider and vote yes on bill A5955. She talked down to us and stated that once she voted on a bill she could not change her mind. I found it very rude and quite irresponsible not to take a minute to talk to the people she is supposed to be representing. I got a much better reception from someone who represents a different district than my own representative.
When we gathered at the bus to return home, we met with the person who she did meet with after he did make an appointment. She referred to those of us lobbying as you people. When asked what she meant, she replied you people trying to repeal the safe act. It will never be repealed. I do not know about all of you, but I can speak for myself. If this is the type of representation we have in Albany, then we have no representation in the 116th district. Please consider these action when you vote in November 2014.
