Deferiet board allows lawn equipment purchase

DEFERIET — The village Board of Trustees approved expenditures, decided how to handle surplus items and made plans for the annual village picnic during its meeting Wednesday night.

The board authorized the Department of Public Works to purchase a lawn mower and weed-trimming machine using the department’s equipment budget.

Robert J. Campany of Fourth Coast Inc. reported to the board that the aeration control upgrades at the wastewater treatment plant have been completed. Work at the municipal building, including installation of lights and front porch repairs, is continuing.

Trustees passed a resolution allowing any unused village property to be declared surplus and sold through sealed bids.

Using the $22,500 available through the Consolidated Local Street and Highway Improvement Program grant, the village will accept bids for paving Anderson Avenue and Riverside Drive.

As a cost-effective measure, the board has changed recycling days and will now pick up paper, cardboard and magazines on the first Thursday of the month and glass, aluminum and plastic on the third Thursday.

The board has set the village picnic for July 26. The event will include food, games and a cupcake-baking contest.

Because of Independence Day, the next board meeting will be at 6 p.m. July 1.
