Two truckers jailed on weapon charge at Lowville Kraft plant

LOWVILLE — Two truckers were arrested Monday morning for allegedly having a metal knuckle knife in the Kraft Foods parking lot on Utica Boulevard.

Village police charged Coleman L. Gibson Jr., 47, Philadelphia, Pa., with third-degree criminal possession of a weapon, while Ronald L. Thomas, 50, Detroit, Mich., was charged with fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon. Mr. Gibson’s charge was third-degree because of a prior conviction, police said.

Both men were arraigned before Village Justice Patricia H. Yarina and sent to Lewis County jail, with bail set at $5,000 for Mr. Gibson and $1,500 for Mr. Thomas.

Police said they responded to the complaint of an uncooperative man with a metal knuckle knife inside a C.R. England tractor-trailer and found the weapon — along with some “remains of fruit” — in a bag under the trailer of the truck, which was being driven by the two men.

State police and Lewis County sheriff’s deputies assisted at the scene.
