Helen Mitchell peacefully passed away on Sunday, June 2, 2013 at the age of 102 at Samaritan Hospital in Troy, New York.
She was born on December 24, 1910 in Ellenburg Depot. Helen proudly earned her Bachelors and Masters degrees in Education, and spent her career as a teacher until she retired from the Madrid-Waddington Central School District.
Helen lived for years at her Madrid Avenue home in Potsdam. She loved her country home, and was known for her beautiful flower gardens. She enjoyed traveling, baking, and growing fruits and vegetables in her garden. Helen also loved spending time at the log cabin she built with her husband in Colton.
She was predeceased by her husband, Albert; and her daughter, Lorraine Thomas. Survivors include her son, John; her grandchildren, Wendy Tarricone; Brett Mitchell; Robert Claflin (Kathy); Daniel Claflin (Ericka;) two step-granddaughters, Denise Folino (Jeff); and Cathy Claflin; and her great-grandchildren, Nicholas Tarricone; Christopher Tarricone; Nathan Claflin; and Molly Claflin.
At her request, no memorial services will be held. Anyone wishing to make a memorial contribution can send them to the Friends of Potsdam Public Library.
