Migrant worker sentenced to prison for fatal DWI crash in Ellisburg

A migrant farm worker from Mexico was sentenced Tuesday in Jefferson County Court to up to 4 years in state prison for killing another worker while driving a vehicle while intoxicated.

Amado Hernandez-Alvarado, 23, Mexico City, was sentenced to 1 to 4 years in prison for an April 15 guilty plea to vehicular manslaughter.

He admitted he was under the influence of alcohol July 28 when the pickup truck he was driving went off Lake Road and overturned, killing Rafael Espinoza, 33, Quintana Roo, Mexico, a man that Mr. Hernandez-Alvarado described as his best friend.

At the time of the accident, the Sheriff’s Department said Mr. Hernandez-Alvarado had been working at Sheland Farms in Ellisburg for about eight years, presenting immigration documents containing assumed names. It was later determined he did not have proper documentation allowing him to work in the United States.

He will likely face deportation proceedings upon his release from prison.
