NNCS High School Band receives superior rating in competition

NORFOLK - Just call the Norwood-Norfolk High School Band superior.

That was the rating the 40 members of the band received during a recent music festival at Lake George.

“We received a superior rating on our performance. I am very proud of my students,” 7-12 band teacher Sarah Towler said.

She said the students are judged by two graders, a band person and a choral person, based on their performance including tone, intonation, technique and music choices. They received an overall score of 92 out of 100.

“They have a grading sheet they fill out. They average the two scores for the overall score,” Ms. Towler said.

It’s not the first time the Norwood-Norfolk band students have come home with the superior rating.

“We’ve been to it for three years. We’ve gotten a superior rating whenever we go,” she said.

Bands represented range from elementary to high school, according to Ms. Towler, who has been Norwood-Norfolk’s 7-12 band teacher for the past six years.

“They have different weekends they do this. The day we performed there were four schools there. They can have anywhere from elementary to high school,” she said.

The students receive a superior plaque with a ribbon for their efforts.

“I’m extremely proud,” Ms. Towler said.

In addition to the music festival, she said the band members perform during two concerts at school - a winter concert in December and a spring concert in May.

And, as they continue to perform, their level of professional increases, the band teacher said.

“In my six years I’ve spent here, my kids have become very in tune with how they sound and how they balance with other people in the ensemble,” she said.
