Robert C. Layton


Watertown- Robert C. “Bob” Layton, 89, Gill St., Watertown, passed away Tuesday morning at St. Joseph’s Hospital, Syracuse.

The funeral will be 1 pm Friday, June 14th at the Reed & Benoit Funeral Home with Rev. Leon VanWie, pastor of Asbury United Methodist Church officiating. Burial will follow in North Watertown Cemetery. Calling hours are Thursday, June 13th from 4 pm - 7 pm at the funeral home. Memorial donations are encouraged to be made to the American Cancer Society or to the St. Joseph’s Hospital Foundation, 973 James St., Syracuse, NY 13203.

Bob was born in Watertown, January 15, 1924, a son of Clarence C. and Lauretta Kellner Layton, Sr.. Following his education, Bob joined the US Army in January of 1942, serving in the Asiatic-Pacific Theatre during his tour. He was honorably discharged in January of 1946.

Bob was employed with the Firestone Tire Co. in Watertown and Carthage. He later went to work as a mechanic and tire man for the Anchor Motor Freight Co.on Wellesley Island, retiring from there.

He was a long time communicant of Asbury United Methodist Church. He enjoyed watching television game shows and reading word books. Bob enjoyed visiting his extended Diner families at Mo’s Diner, Factory St., Frieda’s, Court St., the Crossroads Diner, Watertown and AJ’s Diner in Brownville.

He is survived by two sisters, Ruth (Donald) Thornton and Gertrude M. Clark, both of Watertown. Many nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by two brothers, John W. Layton and Clarence C. Layton, Jr. and two sisters, Grace Dolliver and Heloise Guga.
