Elva Schumann, age 81, was called home to the Lord on June 9, 2013 surrounded by her loving family. Funeral services for Mrs. Schumann will be held at Notre Dame Church on Thursday, June 13, 2013 at 10:00am with the Rev. F. James Shurtleff officiating. Burial will be at St. Mary’s Cemetery following the funeral services. Calling hours will be from 2:00 to 4:00pm and 6:00 to 8:00pm at Frary Funeral Home on Wednesday, June 12, 2013.

She is survived by her husband of 60 years, Ernest, five children, Jeff, Colleen and spouse David Powers, Kathy, Charles and late wife Kim, Mary and spouse Allen Rishe. Seven grandchildren and spouses, Aaron and Lindy Powers, Joshua and Kristen Powers, Joel, Jacob, Joshua, Samantha Rishe, and Matthew Schumann. Three great grandchildren, Brodie, Kyan and Liam Powers. Brothers, Richard and Willard Ashley. Sisters, Diane Ashley Stroble and Theresa Ashley Kaczmarek. She was predeceased by parents Charles and Bernadette Ashley and step-grandchild Nicole Davis.

Elva was born on November 13, 1931 in Ogdensburg, the daughter of Charles and Bernadette Fortin Ashley. She graduated from St. Mary’s Academy in 1948. Elva married Ernest Schumann at Notre Dame Church on September 13, 1952 with the Rev. A.D. Charbonneau officiating.

She was a sensational mother and wife who also worked at Woolworth’s, Acco and Singer.

She was a member of the Altar and Rosary Society as well as the Knights of Columbus auxiliary.

Knitting, Cooking and spending time with family were her most enjoyed activities.

Elva was very devoted to her family and friends and will be cherished forever.

Donations may be made in her memory to the Hospice and Palliative Care of St. Lawrence Valley at 6805 US Highway 11, Potsdam, NY 13676.
