Sackets Harbor approves multiple construction projects

SACKETS HARBOR — The village Board of Trustees approved moving forward on a number of projects at its meeting Tuesday.

The board received and accepted low bids of $34,900 for the development of a new fuel depot, $14,886.93 to repair the roof of its water treatment plant, $14,372 to repair the roof of the visitors center and $9,800 to repair the substructure of the Pickering Beach Museum.

The board also approved a $90,986 road paving-project to take place on Washington and Ontario streets, after it redirected the savings generated by low bids on the other approved projects to cover an approximately $15,000 shortfall of its initial budget projections and carryover Consolidated Local Street and Highway Improvement Program funds.

Corey G. Reid, an engineer at Bernier, Carr & Associates, Watertown, told the board that work on a $2.5 million project to improve the capacity of the water treatment plant could mobilize as soon as next week.

It also was announced during the meeting that the village had received a final State Pollutant Discharge Elimination System permit in connection with the outfall at its sewage treatment plant. The village received the permit, allowing it not to have to replace a broken outfall pipe, by demonstrating the quality of its treated water meets state Department of Environmental Conservation standards.

The board also announced Jan W. Maas as its Citizen of the Year. Mr. Maas has served in a number of community groups, such as the Sackets Harbor Central School Board of Education, village Heritage Area committee, Sackets Harbor Historical Society and village and town of Hounsfield’s Joint Recreation Committee.
