CARTHAGE — The village Board of Trustees approved a cleaning contract, fireworks display and change of insurance at its June 3 meeting.

The village will hire Kimple Property Services of West Carthage to strip and wax the floors and clean the windows at the municipal building. The cleaning service will charge $545 to do the floors, applying five coats of wax, and $200 to wash the windows.

Trustee Michael F. Astafan, who owns rental properties, said the prices were reasonable.

Acting on the advice of Fuller Insurance Agency Inc. representative Michael C. Gillette, the board agreed to change its insurance company from Glatfelter Public Practice of York, Pa., to Trident Insurance Services of San Antonio, Texas. The change will result in savings of $5,000.

At the request of the Carthage Area Chamber of Commerce, the board approved having State Street blocked off from Canal Street to Riverside Drive to allow for pedestrian travel during the July 6 fireworks festival. Village President G. Wayne McIlroy said the chamber plans to have vendors at the event who, under village law, will be charged a $10 permit fee.

Mr. McIlroy also announced Reginald Huber Jr. has passed the civil service exam for police chief and will be promoted to that position with a $2,000 increase in pay, bringing his annual salary to $66,950.
