Retired Watertown Police Chief Stephen D. Watson has died at age 72.

Mr. Watson died at Samaritan Medical Center on Wednesday night.

He served as acting police chief when the department was going through a tumultuous time following the resignation of Chief Michael J. Hennegan in 1988. Mr. Watson had been with the department for 24 years until he retired a year later at age 50.

Mr. Watson was named acting chief while Mr. Hennegan was investigated. Mr. Hennegan attended a party at which he was accused of witnessing cocaine use and doing nothing about it.

Mr. Watson also served as acting chief in 1981, when Chief Joseph C. Loftus went on medical leave. A 1957 graduate of Lowville Academy and a former Army military policeman, he worked his way up to deputy chief in 1978.

Calling hours will be at Cummings Funeral Service Inc. from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday. The funeral service is set for 2 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. A full obituary will be published.
