Riley Luckie recently represented the Ogdensburg Boys & Girls Club at the New York State Youth of the Year Competition in Albany along with 32 other club members from across the state, where Imari Clark of the Rochester Boys and Girls Club was named New York State Youth of the Year.
Riley, an 11-year member of the club, was chosen by local club staff for her citizenship, character, volunteerism, academic success and longtime participation in club activities.
Requirements to participate in the competition included writing essays about her future plans and what the club means to her. Teachers, family members, coaches and club staff also submitted essays. While in Albany, Riley interacted with fellow Youth of the Year, toured the capital area and met with state Senator Patricia Ritchie and Assemblywoman Addie Russell.
Riley is completing her sophomore year at Ogdensburg Free Academy, where she is a member of the National Honor Society with a 93 average and participates in softball and basketball. For many years she has volunteered at the club for Expo, mentoring, board games with senior citizens and whatever area needed.
She is a past winner of the clubs Russ McDonald Service Award for service to the club and the community.
Riley has been a fixture at the club for many years, club Assistant Director Megan McNamara said. She has always been quick to assist staff in any area needed. She has made many friends at the club and has grown into the type of person we hope our members become. Hardworking, achieving academic success, a plan for the future and a genuine concern for others. Although Riley did not win the state title the judges were impressed with her and said that the Ogdensburg Boys and Girls Club always sends impressive candidates to the competition.
Ms. McNamara accompanied Riley on the trip.
When speaking about the club, Riley said that the club has been my second home and I have basically grown up there. The club has not only helped me mature but it has also helped me learn how to help others mature.
The New York State Youth of the Year Competition is sponsored by the New York State Alliance of Boys and Girls Clubs and nationally by Tupperware.
Other former representatives from the Ogdensburg Boys & Girls Club include: Amanda Main, Willie Moore, Mike Luckie, Jacob Herzog, John Cooper, Kyle Lipinksy and Konnor Murdock. Riley will be honored for her accomplishments at the Dave Shea Sportsmanship Award Ceremony at the club on June 21.
