The Syracuse University mens basketball team is headed north this summer for international action.
The Orange will play three exhibition games in Canada in mid-August. Games already scheduled are for Aug. 21 against Bishops University in Montreal, Aug. 23 against Carleton University at Ottawas Scotiabank Place, home of the NHLs Ottawa Senators, and Aug. 24 against the Ottawa Gee-Gees at Montpetit Hall in Ottawa.
SU head coach Jim Boeheim is hoping to have his freshmen certified by the NCAAs clearinghouse to enable them to play. Five new players, including point guard Tyler Ennis of Toronto, will begin their SU careers this fall.
SU was originally scheduled to tour Italy this summer. But the Italians dont begin play until later in August, which would pose a scheduling conflict with Syracuse players who need to be back for classes.
■ Former Syracuse standout Dion Waiters of the Cleveland Cavaliers is one of 27 players confirmed to attend the 2013 USA Basketball Mens National Team mini-camp that will be July 22-25 in Las Vegas.
The group includes 20 players who own USA Basketball experience, the last three top choices in the NBA Draft and one 2012 Olympic gold medalist.
Waiters averaged 14.7 points, 3.0 assists and 2.4 rebounds per game in his NBA rookie season. He played in 61 games, starting 48, and was named to the NBA All-Rookie first team.
