To The Editor:
An Open Letter to Senator Joe Griffo:
Boy, do I understand where you are coming from in this story. As the mother of a local police officer, this issue hits very close to home with me.
Griffo: Police harassment bill annoyingly misunderstood
Sen. Joseph Griffo, R-Utica, is annoyed that his bill to punish those who shove or kick on-duty police officers has been misrepresented and misunderstood.
I feel exactly the same way about the Womens Equality Act, which has been maliciously misunderstood to be about abortion rather than seen as what it truly is, The New York Womens Bill of Rights. It is annoying how the WEA continues to be mischaracterized as an expansion of abortion when it in fact merely clarifies that a doctor can and should be making the best medical decisions he can with a woman when it comes to her health without fear of criminal prosecution if she is also pregnant.
I cant envision a situation where the NYS Senate would allow the law to interfere with a private medical decision for a man, can you?
And, of course, the other nine provisions of the WEA are also critical needs to ensure that we finally give 10 million New York state women the same protections under the law that New York men have always had.
As your constituent, I encourage you to urge Senator Skelos and Senator Klein to bring the bill to the floor for a full debate and fair vote. It is astounding to think that in the 21st Century two white, privileged men get to block progress for 10 million NYS Women, isnt it?
