Happy birthday, SeaComm

To The Editor:

SeaComm turned 50 on June 6. This milestone has been a concrete way for us to look back and appreciate all of the hard work and dedication that has been accomplished since those early days.

It all started with a tool box (which is iconic for us today and can be seen in the lobbies of all our branches), $50 and a shared vision of 10 Chevrolet Foundry workerswho each wanted to improve the financial lives of not only themselves, but those who they worked with. That vision is no less important today than it was back on June 6, 1963.

The 10 men who signed our charter of incorporation were James G. Capell, Paul R. Catlin, James R. Ellis, Harold H. Guile, Earl M. Jackson, Carl L. MacDonald, Darrell Mills, Max M. Ryan, Frank E. Sequin and John Zakarauskas. Earl Jackson, the remaining charter member, is still an active member of the credit union. He reminds me when we speak about that those early dayshow SeaComm has become so very much more than they had ever dreamed.Even though the name has changeda number of times since the signing of the charter, that is a great testament to all those who have built upon that very foundation which he and those other men believed in.

As Arthur Ashe Jr.once said, “Success is journey and not a destination.” Today, SeaComm celebrates five decades of shared success. That journey is continual, as we work each and every day to improve the financial lives of our 40,000-plus members and the communities in which we do business.

In 2010, we opened our sixth retail branch in Ogdensburg, and I had remarked at that grand opening event that it was the first time that a SeaComm branch was being opened without a presence of a GM plant in operation. Even thoughwe no longer have that physical reminder, it is no less important.

On June 8 we held a celebration to thank our membership for their trust in us for the last 50 years. It was a huge success with more than 3,000 in attendance. It was very rewarding to see so many gather with us and celebrate SeaComm!

Thank you to the Massena Volunteer Fire Department, whose members tirelessly barbequed, to all of the vendors who provided great entertainment and novelties and our transportation folks ensuring that everyone was brought to and from the St. Lawrence Centre parking area safe and sound.Andthe fireworks which concluded the event were spectacular.

On behalf of the board of directors, management and our entire staff, we look forward to carrying on this rich history and continuing the journey that was started by those 10 men a half of a century later.
