BRASHER FALLS - For three hours Saturday, supporters of St. Lawrence Central athletes took Dodge vehicles for a test drive in a fundraiser that put just over $2,600 in the schools athletic fund.
Frank C. Lallier, general manager of Blevins Seaway Motor, said his dealership is generally involved in two test drive fundraisers a year - a Chrysler event and a Dodge test drive. The Chrysler test drive was held earlier this month at Trinity Catholic School in Massena.
The Dodge event is tailored toward high schools. Schools can earn $20 for every person that signs up for a test drive, Mr. Lallier said.
Christine A. Compo-Martin, one of the St. Lawrence Central coaches working the test drive event, said 132 people signed up to drive one of the Dodge vehicles on a short route on and near the school campus.
We so appreciate Blevins and their willingess to give up a beautiful Saturday that could have been spent on the links or the river to help raise funds for our school. In these tough times, every dollar counts and the money goes right back into the program and the kids immediately benefit, she said.
Its good to be involved in the community. We try to have it in conjunction with other events that are going on at the school, he said.
The test drive event was held after a Dana Memorial Scholarship walk that attracted nearly 300 participants. A Civil War camp was also set up on the school grounds Saturday.
Mr. Lallier said Blevins Seaway Motors brought a Caravan minivan, a limited edition Dart and a Journey to the Brasher Falls event. We dont intend to sell a lot of vehicles at these events. We do it as a favor to the school. We know budgets are tight, and booster clubs can use all the help they can get, he noted.
But he said the vehicles brought to Brasher Falls were popular in the Dodge brand lineup. The minivan is always a good seller for us. Its the number one selling minivan in the country. For $23,000, you can be driving a new van. The Dodge Dart is the fastest selling compact in the nation. The Dart starts out at $19,000 and gets 40 miles per gallon. The Journey crossover is a blend between a car, a minivan and a sports utility vehicle, according to Mr. Lallier.
