Retired investigator, businessman plans run for Lewis legislator

DEER RIVER — A retired police investigator and businessman from Deer River plans to seek the District 3 seat on the Lewis County Legislature.

“I’ve always been politically minded and politically involved,” said Republican Craig P. Brennan, who spent a combined 25 years with the West Carthage Police Department and state police. “I think I’d bring a lot to the board.”

Legislator Charles R. Fanning, R-Copenhagen, a retired dairy farmer who represents all town of Denmark residents, plans to run for a new two-year term, likely setting up a GOP primary.

Because of redistricting, District 3 next year will encompass most of Denmark, except for the Castorland area, along with the northern part of the town of Lowville.

Mr. Brennan retired from law enforcement in 2001, serving the last nine years as a state police investigator. He then worked as general manager of T.F. Wright & Sons Granite Foundry, Carthage, for three years before returning to his roots with a three-year stint as administrator of the Metro-Jefferson Drug Task Force through the Jefferson County district attorney’s office.

The Carthage Central School graduate served four years in the Navy, including one year in Da Nang, Vietnam.

“With these past life experiences, I feel I can bring quite a bit to the board, as far as fresh ideas,” Mr. Brennan said.

If elected, the Deer River resident said, he hopes to find a vehicle with which to communicate with constituents and solicit their comments and concerns.

Mr. Brennan said he believes that money needs to be spent to entice businesses to come to the area but that county officials must be careful it is being spent wisely.

He also cited the need for lawmakers to overcome differences of opinion to work together toward common goals.

“It’s just like raising a child,” he said. “You have to come across on the same page to get anything accomplished.”

Mr. Brennan is a past president of Carlowden Country Club in Denmark and a member of the Carthage Elks Lodge and the Carthage chapters of the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars.

He was vice president of the committee that raised funds to restore the Soldiers Monument in Carthage and serves on the board of the Timothy F. Wright Memorial Fund, which funds scholarships for high school students.

Mr. Brennan and his wife, Rosemary, have been married for 42 years. They have three children and four grandchildren.
