Big development in Syracuse on the movie front

The Man of Steel helped to launch new giant screens over the weekend at Regal Cinemas Destiny USA in Syracuse.

“Superman: The Man of Steel” was the first movie screened for the new Imax and RPX screens at Destiny USA. The Imax screen is three times the average movie theater screen. It’s 40 feet tall and stretches 72 feet wide.

The RPX (Regal Premium Experience) screen is slightly smaller at 31 feet tall and 58 feet wide.

The two screens add nearly 700 more seats to the Regal Cinema complex, for a total of 3,400 seats.

The concept of the Imax Theater originated in Montreal in 1967. The idea revolutionized cinema even more when 3-D viewing was created for Imax theaters in 1986.

The Imax and RPX theaters at Destiny USA are on the third level next to OptiGolf. The theaters have their own entrance and concession area. Regal has 17 other theaters in its complex.

Tickets for the RPX theaters are $11 for adults, $8.50 for children 11 and under and $8 for senior citizens. Matinees are $8.50 for adults and children and $8 for senior citizens.

Imax tickets are $17.50 for adults $15 for children and $14.50 for senior citizens.
