POTSDAM — The academic leaders for the class of 2013 at Potsdam Central School are Kate Hildreth, valedictorian, Rhea LaFleur, salutatorian, and BreAnna Stephenson, outstanding vocational student.

Miss Hildreth, daughter of Joe Hildreth and Caroline Downing, has a grade point average of 97.99. She has completed several advanced classes, including economics at Clarkson University, where she earned a 4.0. She is president of the National Honor Society and vice president of the Environmental Club. She is a member of Potsdam’s Student Council, Key Club and Olympiad team, competing in the state contest for three years.

She participated in varsity soccer, basketball and track, and was captain for varsity basketball and track teams this year. She plays the saxophone for Potsdam’s Wind Ensemble and Jazz Band and takes private piano lessons. Over the summer, she is a lifeguard for the Potsdam Recreation Department.

Miss Hildreth will attend Dartmouth College, Hanover, N.H.

Miss LaFleur, daughter of Ronald LaFleur and Laura Goshko, has a grade point average of 97.89. She participates in the school’s music programs, including Canta Sera, Area All State New York State School Music Association choir and solo competitions, All County Jazz and Choir and Drama Club.

Miss LaFleur has written and recorded a collection of songs, composed background music and sung at many local events. She played junior varsity and varsity soccer and is a member of National Honor Society, National French Honor Society, Latin Club and Model United Nations.

She will attend the University of Southern California in Los Angeles.

Miss Stephenson, daughter of Tammy Stephenson, has been a student in Seaway Technical Education Center’s early childhood education program for two years. She has taken abnormal psychology and counseling psychology: theory and practice through Clarkson University, receiving an A+ in both. Miss Stephenson also has taken a psychology course from Paul Smiths College through Potsdam Central School, received an A grade.

In early childhood education, she took the National Occupational Competency Testing Institute assessment, where she received a 100 percent in the performance section and 95.9 in the written section.

She volunteers with the American Red Cross Club at Potsdam, where she serves as president and was a founding member. Miss Stephenson received the Young Humanitarian Award from the Red Cross last summer. She serves as secretary and treasurer of the National Technical Honor Society and is a student leader.

The Seaway Technical Education Center honored her as a high achiever, she has served as an assistant coach for two years and is a member of St. Lawrence Health Initiative’s TEENS Health Program.

Miss Stephenson will major in elementary education at SUNY Plattsburgh.
