Lindahl, Ely named recipients of 2013 Rachel Somers Grant Award

CANTON - The Social Action Committee of the Unitarian Universalist Church in Canton will present the Rachel Somers Grant Award to local community activists Chelle Lindahl and Melinda Ely, co-coordinators of the Local Living Festival, on Sunday

The annual social action award honors people who work to make ours a more humane and progressive community. The award is made in memory of Rachel Somers Grant, a member of the UU Church, teacher, and activist who lived in Canton from 1977 until her death in 1990.

Chelle and Melinda first worked together as volunteers for the North Country Sustainable Energy Fair. They later rallied with other volunteers to recreate and re-conceive the event with a broader vision of simple and sustainable living, creating the Local Living Venture.

The social action award will be presented to Chelle and Melinda as part of the church’s regular 10:30 a.m. service on June 23. The community is invited to the service and award presentation to learn more about their contributions to our community and to join the congregation in honoring them.

The Unitarian Universalist Church is located at 3 East Main St. across the street from the Village Green in Canton. Visit the church website,, for further information.
