BROWNVILLE — General Brown Central School District’s proposed $20,968,134 budget passed 1,009 to 367 Tuesday evening.

The vote is the second held in the district this year. A proposed $21,096,729 budget was voted down in May when it failed to gain a 60 percent “super majority” required under the state’s tax cap law.

“It’s great that it passed, but in reality we still have a challenge ahead,” said outgoing Superintendent Stephen J. Vigliotti.

The adopted budget will raise the tax levy by 5.4 percent from the 2012-13 spending plan. With the new budget, the district will cut 17 positions as well as several programs.

According to Mr. Vigliotti, the one thing the district can look forward to is a $160,000 grant secured through Senator Patty Ritchie’s office.

The grant, meant to be used to purchase school buses, frees up a portion of the budget and allows the general 23-24 class size to be maintained.
