One injured in Deferiet house fire

DEFERIET — One person was injured Tuesday evening in a house fire in the village of Deferiet.

Deferiet Fire Chief Timothy J. Irey said the lone occupant of a home at 21 Wilna Ave. received minor burns on his arms and was taken to Carthage Area Hospital by the Carthage Area Rescue Squad. No name was available for release at the time of incident.

Mr. Irey speculated that the fire originated in the two-story home’s kitchen. The building sustained heavy damage.

The initial fire call came through at 8:30 p.m. Tuesday. As of 10 p.m., fire crews from Deferiet, Natural Bridge, Carthage, West Carthage, Great Bend and Fort Drum still were working to clear the scene.

Minor heat and smoke damage, coupled with a power outage, were inflicted on the two neighboring homes. National Grid was on scene.

Investigation into the cause of the fire was ongoing as of late Tuesday.
