HARRISVILLE The academic leaders for the class of 2013 at Harrisville Central School are Sierra Hewitt, valedictorian, Janel Swanson, salutatorian, and Brooke Canning, top vocational student.
Miss Hewitt, daughter of David Hewitt, Chaumont, and Lisa Hewitt, Harrisville, has an academic average of 95.22. She will receive an Advanced Designation Regents Diploma, with honors, and has earned advanced placement credits in U.S. history and English literature and composition. She has participated in varsity girls basketball and softball, and is a member of National Honor Society, where she serves as executive committee member and has served as treasurer.
For three years, she has served as treasurer and president of Young Adult Book Club, is vice president of the Art Club, a member of Yearbook Club, peer leader for Sources of Strength and is class vice president. As a junior, Miss Hewitt participated in St. Lawrence Universitys Scholar Enrichment Program and Clarkson Universitys Project Challenge. She also served on the Lewis County Youth Bureau for two years as a school representative.
She has received the University of Rochester Frederick Douglass and Susan B. Anthony Award, U.S. Marine Corps Distinguished Athlete Award, was a Hugh OBrian Youth Leadership participant and received Section X All-Academic awards in basketball and softball.
Miss Hewitt will attend Nazareth College, Rochester, to major in physical therapy.
Miss Swanson, daughter of Regina LaVancha, Harrisville, and the late Corey Swanson, has an academic average of 92.87. She will receive a Regents diploma and has earned advanced placement credits in U.S. history and English literature and composition.
She has participated in junior varsity and varsity soccer and basketball, served on the Student Representative Assembly for two years, is vice president of the Yearbook Club, class treasurer, a member of the executive committee of the National Honor Society, was a member of Young Adult Book Club for two years and treasurer of Vocal Music.
She has received Section X All-Academic awards and Section X Sportsmanship awards in soccer and basketball, was an Augsbury North County Scholar, received a Clarkson University Achievement Award, the University of Rochester Bausch & Lomb Award, Elmira College Key Award and Air Force Mathematics Award.
Miss Swanson will attend Albany College of Pharmacy.
Miss Canning, daughter of Ralph Canning, Harrisville, and the late Lynn Canning, has an academic average of 91.05. She will receive an Advanced Designation Regents diploma with majors in criminal justice at Howard G. Bohlen Jr. Technical Center, Watertown. She has participated in varsity girls soccer and basketball and served as manager and bookkeeper for junior varsity and varsity boys basketball teams for three years.
She participated in the St. Lawrence University Scholars Enrichment Program in her junior year, has been a member of the Youth Advisory Council for two years has been a member of National Junior Honor Society and National Honor Society.
She received a Section X Sportsmanship award for softball and Section X All-Northern awards for soccer and baseball. She helped start and organize fundraising for the Pink Zone in the school district, to benefit breast cancer awareness and Ryans Wish Foundation, and received the Attorney General Triple C Award in June 2012.
Miss Canning will attend SUNY Potsdam to major in psychology.
