OGDENSBURG The city Board of Education approved the appointments of several employees to administrative positions Monday.
The districts administrative reorganization was sparked this year by the retirement of David J. Valois, assistant superintendent and Committee on Special Education chairman.
Superintendent Timothy M. Vernsey expects the reorganization to save the district $137,000.
Athletics Director Anthony E. Bjork was appointed assistant high school principal, starting at $71,626.
Mr. Bjork will continue serving as the athletics director but will join the administrative union. Until the appointment, Mr. Bjork was a teacher on special assignment, making him part of the teachers union, although he had not taught a class in seven years.
His removal from the union riled the Ogdensburg Education Association leadership, which has asserted the school district is reducing the number of teachers while adding administrative personnel.
Board members authorized moving Ogdensburg Free Academy Middle School Principal Kevin Kendall to the director of curriculum, instruction and assessment position at a $91,080 salary.
The board named Grant C. Madill Elementary School Principal Debora M. Hannan the special education director at a salary of $94,749.
OFA Assistant High School Principal Pamela J. Luckie will become the middle school principal and earn $78,798.
Fourth-grade English teacher Jacquelyn L. Kelly will become an assistant elementary school principal as well. Board members set her salary at $68,000.
Mrs. Kelly will serve as the principal at Lincoln Elementary School before its closure next year, when she will move to John F. Kennedy Elementary School, Mr. Vernsey said.
Mrs. Kelly has taught in Ogdensburg for 12 years, Mr. Vernsey said, and has 15 years of teaching experience.
I think shell make an outstanding assistant elementary principal, he said.
In addition to those appointments, the administrative reorganization will let Paula B. Scott, principal of Lincoln and Sherman elementary schools, become principal at Madill to replace Mrs. Hannan.
