Reality Check of St. Lawrence County recognized Deborah L. Miller, a volunteer organizer with the Supporting Peer’s Options to Resist Tobacco program, on Wednesday as a local champion for her work in the local fight against tobacco use.

Mrs. Miller began working with SPORT in 2001 when it was operated by the St. Lawrence County Health Initiative.

When funding dried up in 2010 Mrs. Miller started volunteering her time with the group.

Alicia Simmons, a senior in the SPORT program, said Mrs. Miller has helped the kids “through the good times and the bad times; she’s always been there.”

Chelsea Laflair, another senior in the SPORT program, said, “I would like to thank Debbie for teaching us all to be independent individuals, peer educators and better members of the community.”

Reality Check Coordinator Melanie E. Flack said Mrs. Miller was chosen as one of this year’s local champions due to her tireless work with SPORT.

“She was an easy pick,” Ms. Flack said.

While Reality Check and SPORT don’t always work together, they have complimentary missions, Mrs. Miller said.

“[Reality Check teaches] the kids about [tobacco] marketing tactics and how they lure [kids] in, and our program is there to help the ones who want to quit,” Mrs. Miller said.

Reality Check also honored Ms. Simmons as a local champion for her work over the past several years with the SPORT program.

Reality Check further recognized Kaitlin Laflair, Aubrey O’Marah and Chelsea Laflair as youth leaders.
