Things couldn’t have gone much better on Saturday as the Howie’s Bass Derby staged its first edition.

Even the weather cooperated as a day-long threat of rain did not materialize until the final fish had been weighed in at Hosmer’s Marina.

Proceeds of the tournament went to Wounded Warriors Outdoor Adventures and the St. Lawrence River provided a memorable day of fishing for several servicemen.

“Things really went well and the fishing was great. I had two soldiers in my boat and they both caught their biggest bass ever,” said Bob Giordano who has played a lead role in several Wounded Warriors Outdoor Adventure events.

“One of the guys, Dylan Bice, took third place in the Big Fish Division.

Pat Grady led the division by virtue of the tie-breaker, length of fish, after he and fellow Salt City Bassmasters Club member Brian Eisch weighed in five-pounders.

“The fishing is really great here. I am confident that I can get our club to come here and hold a derby on the St. Lawrence,” said Eisch, a retired serviceman from Sandy Creek, who was wounded in action.

The team division was led by the Ogdensburg duo of Larry Ewart and Rick Conger who weighed in a 22-pound bag. Last Saturday Ewart and Conger placed one-two at the Opening Day Smallmouth Derby of the St. Lawrence Valley Sportsmen’s Club.

“We fished out of Wilson Hill again today and the area really produced,” said Ewart.

Pat and Ryan Grady placed second at 21.25 pounds and John Ward and Bob Montpetit took third at 20.25 pounds.
