Theresa garages, house damaged in fire Sunday night

THERESA — Two garages were lost and a house substantially damaged in a large fire Sunday night near Pine and High streets.

The fire began about 9 p.m. at a garage at 225 Pine St., destroying it. The flames spread to a neighbor’s garage at 203 High St., which also was destroyed. The back of the house at 203 High St. was damaged, with crews continuing to work at the scene late into the night.

Donald Breen, owner of the 225 Pine St. home, which did not receive substantial damage, sat on a bench in a neighbor’s front yard as he watched crews at work.

“When I came out, the smoke was just pouring,” he said to a neighbor.

After ensuring that his wife, Kelly, and son Timothy, 20, were out of the home, he said he moved his cars and boat away from the garage and cut the power to his home.

“In a half hour, it’s completely gone,” he said of the garage.

The cause of the fire was not known Sunday night, though Jefferson County fire investigators were at the scene. No injuries were reported for occupants of either home.

Responding to the fire were the Theresa, Evans Mills, Philadelphia, Plessis, LaFargeville, Redwood, Oxbow, Antwerp and Pamelia fire departments. The Indian River, Evans Mills, Redwood and Thousand Islands Emergency Rescue Service ambulance crews also were on the scene.
