Heuvelton Labor Day Committee disbanding after 16 years

HEUVELTON – The Heuvelton Labor Day Committee is disbanding after 16 years due to the failing health of its membership and the increasing cost of the holiday weekend celebrations.

Mayor Barbara A. Lashua said she is attempting to find another organization who will continue the Labor Day Committee’s legacy.

“We’re proud of what we did,” committee member Shirley A. Todd said.

The committee has spent the last 16 years organizing Labor Day celebrations in Heuvelton, including a fireworks display and parade.

“We just kept it going year to year,” Mrs. Todd said.

Events also included an annual walk/run, games by the Heuvelton boat launch, an auction, dancing and lots of eating.

Mrs. Todd said an estimated 5,000 people came out for the 2012 events.

“We had one of the best fireworks displays in all of St. Lawrence County,” she said. “It was probably 25 minutes long.”

But the event costs between $8,000 and $10,000 to pull off, Mrs. Todd said, and it’s a tall order for a three-member committee and a small core of volunteers to raise that much money.

She said it’s becoming increasingly difficult to find locations that will host fundraisers. With the price of gas on the increase, traveling to far-flung locations was eating into the committee’s final tally, she said.

“We put a lot of thought into it,” Mrs. Todd said of the decision to disband. “We’re happy we kept it going that long.”

In particular, Mrs. Todd said, she is “happy the young people grew up with it.”

“It’s time to let somebody else take it over,” she said.

No one has so far stepped forward to continue the tradition, but one is being sought.

“There are a couple of organizations that are interested,” Mrs. Lashua said. “If we could keep it going, that would be great.”
